The evening hue has a universal effect on all who work in the Quarry–a moment in time when fatigue of the day is replaced by wonder and imagination immersed in an aquatic realm 55 million years past, now a stone book with millions of pages.

Every season the fantasy expands, fueled by hundreds of discoveries.  No one was present to observe the complex interplay of organisms and environments, but the story is written within the layers of stone, left by an ancient lake and the life within and around its confines.

To touch the stone is to connect with the planet and its vibrant past along with all its complexity of process.  Whether it is a raised bump or line on the quarry floor, or a slight stain in the stone, life was there once and its record is at your fingertips and is your responsibility.

  The dream of many children is to have a fossil quarry in their backyard.  That dream is my reality. 

We have always shared our exploration, finished art, and science, with those interested, and our explorations and discoveries with the world.  We have been very fortunate to discover ways of preparation that are unique and expose the full beauty of the fossils.  We also have the patience to spend the immense hours needed to carry out the meticulous hand processes.  We collect the details of science that will allow us all better understanding of our planet’s historical journey through time and climate change after climate change.

Long ago we began sharing our values of stewardship for the resources with fellow citizens and the governance of Wyoming protecting while utilizing this resource.  In the late 1950’s we also conceived the idea and carried out the creation of Fossil Butte National Monument. An arduous process in Wyoming, unlike any other state,  for one must obtain by legislation, the approval of the U.S. House and the U.S.Senate and the President.

Our enthusiasm, hard labors and good fortune for the delightful specimen and information entombed in this ancient deposit is something we continue to share. 

We hope more generations of Ulrichs and visitors will find fossils, and themselves, at our quarries by touching and looking into the stone and fossils we discover, prepare, and share.
